So who am I?
Maud Wiemeijer (1993, she/her). Nice to meet you!
I am a writer for film, television, theatre and podcasts.
My love for writing began, I’ll be honest with you, in fan fiction. As a teen I used to write alternative storylines for shows like ER. I would post them on forums, with cliffhangers and lesbian storylines and all, and nobody in my ‘real’ life knew I was doing this. I labeled myself a successful writer and never looked back.
Well, sort of. In 2016, I graduated from the University of Amsterdam in Theatre Studies. I spent a semester in Brighton (UK) at the University of Sussex where I started writing my first play. During my final year of university, I created a series called ANNE+, a web series about a lesbian girl navigating life in Amsterdam. It came from a place of wanting to make something I wish I had seen when I was 14 and closeted. The web series quickly grew out to be an international succes, getting a second televised season and a feature film on Netflix, available in 180 countries. ANNE+ was screened at festivals like Tribeca Film Festival and Outfest, twice nominated for Prix Europe and received several ‘Gouden Kalf’ nominations at the Nederlands Film Festival. I was involved in the entire process of making ANNE+.
After this whirlwind, I wrote an episode for MODERN LOVE: AMSTERDAM and started developing several projects. Among other things, I am now co-writing an original musical, I’ve written a fictional podcast which go into production soon, writing my second feature film and developing a series in London.

My work
In my work, you’ll always find strong queer and female (lead) characters. Positive representation is very important to me, as are authentic, layered characters. Much of my storytelling is about finding your people, self-discovery, relationships and the power of community.
My writing style is layered, sharp and no-nonsense, with room for poetry. Though my main focus is lighthearted drama, I believe the themes I write about are not genre-bound. I am keen to explore any genre.
Being queer, I highly value characters that have a sense of otherness, of trying to navigate who they are, what they want and why. A quote from writer Ocean Vuong describes this best:
“Being queer saved my life. Often we see queerness as deprivation. But when I look at my life, I saw that queerness demanded an alternative innovation from me. I had to make alternative routes; it made me curious; it made me ask, ‘Is this enough for me?’”
